Colleen's Story

I am grateful for the opportunity to write an article for the newsletter. It’s important to me for all of you to know and realize how important the New Hope Women’s Home is to our community. God works through this ministry to change and transform lives!
I look around me and see so many who are having a hard time, are wounded, struggling, and yearning for a healthier life. The women’s home’s greatest asset is being Christ focused with faith-based guidance and God’s love exemplified.
Prior to being in the program I was coping with life one minute at a time. I’d focus on getting to the next minute and the next hour and then the end of the day. I would get up and do it all over again functioning in survival mode. I was once a confident, capable, successful woman with a PA State License and master’s degree in social work. However, as we all know Domestic Violence shatters a person’s life and spirit. It is so sad to me to see the hurting hearts in the world and know that it happens all around us.
I am so fortunate that when I reached out for help the Lord led me to the HandUP Ministry. I lost my confidence and my coping skills diminished to a point that without the intervention of this 6-month residential program my life was not getting better. My hands were wounded and as I tried to pick up the broken pieces shattered before me more pain pulsated and I’d drop the pieces. This caused them to crack and break into more pieces and I felt overwhelmed and hopeless. I was going to counseling and tried to find help. However, the only service that was able to bring me to a place of restoration, healing, and wholeness was the New Hope Women’s Home. The supportive and God centered environment was my saving grace.
I started the program scared, beaten, and with little confidence in myself. I was ashamed. I was accepted for who I was and not treated as less than. It took me some time to realize what it meant to live in a safe environment and begin to trust those around me. Dealing with wounds of the past was difficult at times, and I wasn’t always sure I could finish the program. I was given encouragement, support, and shown the tools not only to deal with violent crimes that could have destroyed my life. But the tools to deal with a lifetime of abuse.
With each passing day I was learning, growing, and deepening my relationship with God. I was gaining strength, new insights, learning to live in truth, and trust God. My self-confidence and hope for the future were restored.
My family and friends were deeply affected by witnessing how God had worked through the HandUP program to better my life and started opening themselves up to learning more about God and attending church.
The Women's Home is a BEACON of the BEAUTY and the Grace of Our Lord. This program is important and helps women to heal woundedness and break the chains which bound them from fully living and serving God. In a world full of Injustice, oppression, and pain this home symbolizes God's mission to shine Love, Beauty, and Value to each one of His children.
God is doing AMAZING things through this program and has shown me that living life Beyond Brokenness is possible!
