Vehicles to Work / Transportation Assistance
HOW TO DONATE:
The “Vehicles to Work” Program at HandUP provides previously owned vehicles to approved clients so that they can find and keep steady employment or have transportation to vital medical appointments. All participating clients are approved through our assistance program and we work closely with them to help them find success in their situations and not just to get a car.
Here’s how the “Vehicle to Work” program works for donors:
You will receive a tax receipt for the value of the vehicle OR we will match your dealer trade-in amount and purchase the vehicle for up to $500. If the trade-in value is higher than $500, you will also receive a receipt so that you may claim the difference. (The IRS requires that you deduct any payment we make to you from the value you claim as a deduction.)

How to Apply
ELIGIBILITY: You may be eligible for a vehicle if you need one to get to work, to start a new job, or to travel to vital medical appointments. If you are not currently employed, you must have a begin date at a new job in order to apply. You will also be asked to show proof of ability to insure and maintain the car. We ask you to agree not to sell the car for at least one year after receiving it.
HOW TO APPLY: Come to the HandUP office and pick up a Vehicles to Work application. The completed form must be returned in person. A staff member will interview you briefly and review the application to make sure it's complete. You will receive an initial approval or denial within 48 hours of completing the application and interview.
CLIENT RESPONSIBILITY: When you are awarded a vehicle, you will be required to earn a predetermined amount of assistance credits by working in the HandUP Store or Recycling Center. You can earn these credits yourself or have someone else work them with/or for you. If you are working elsewhere and you are not able to earn your credit hours with us, we can set up car payments for you.
WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THIS PROGRAM, DUE TO A LACK OF AVAILABLE VEHICLES, but we might be able to help with your transportation problems in a different way. We may be able to help you pay for car repairs or provide financial assistance for you to buy a car yourself. Please call our office at 570-742-3000 and talk to us about other options.

- A road-ready car with a current inspection: We will award this vehicle to an approved client and the title will be transferred.
- A car that needs minor repairs (under $500): We will make the repairs and award the car to a client.
- A “clunker”: We are able to sell the car for scrap and the money will be used to repair other cars in the program.
- A vehicle with a resale value of $1000 or more: Our clients cannot afford to insure more expensive vehicles, so we will resell these vehicles, purchase multiple more affordable ones, and help several families from your single donation.
